THE 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is proving to be a tournament of upsets after minnows Namibia shocked 2004 champions Tunisia with a surprise one-nil victory in their first-ever win at the tournament.

Tuesday’s action got underway with perennial campaigners, Burkina Faso beating Mauritania one-nil after Aston Villa midfielder Bertrand Traore scored a stoppage-time penalty in the closely fought encounter.

Burkina Faso heads Group D with three points after the first round of matches.

In Group E, Namibia shocked 2004 champions Tunisia after winger Deon Hotto scored in the 88th minute to hand the Southern African nation a one-nil victory.

In another Group E match, Hamari Traore and Lassine Sinayoko gave Mali a comfortable two-nil win over South Africa who missed a penalty.

Action continues this Wednesday with the focus on Group F where Africa’s first World Cup semi-finalists Morocco get their first-round matches rolling with a date against Tanzania at 7pm, while DRC plays Zambia at 10pm in a potential thriller.
