Muslim community in Zimbabwe joins global observance of Eid al-Adha

HARARE-MUSLIMS across Zimbabwe have joined millions around the world in celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of the most sacred festivals on the Islamic calendar, marked by prayers, sacrifice, and acts of charity.

Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha commemorates the profound act of faith demonstrated by the Prophet Abraham, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

In Islamic tradition, this willingness was met with divine mercy, and a ram was provided for sacrifice in his son’s place.

The festival, which spans three days, is a time for reflection, spiritual renewal, and generosity, as communities come together to observe rituals and share with the less fortunate.

“When we celebrate the Festival of Sacrifice, we slaughter domestic animals. This symbolises the renewal of our covenant with our creator that we are willing to sacrifice what we value for the sake of God. It’s also a time to share with vulnerable groups, regardless of religious affiliation,” Muslim Leader, Imam Yusuf Anubi said.

The animals, typically goats, sheep, or cattle, are slaughtered according to Halal standards as prescribed by Islamic law.

“Islamic principles must always be followed when slaughtering an animal. First of all, the animal should be healthy and alive at the time of sacrifice. A sharp knife is a requisite and the slaughtering must be done in a single act to avoid unnecessary suffering and one must ensure it bleeds out completely with no leftover blood. However, the slaughtering is only performed by Muslims in the name of Allah,” Muslim community member, Mr Mustafa Office said.

The celebration also coincides with the completion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca one of the five pillars of Islam.

Hajj is a spiritual obligation for all able-bodied and financially capable Muslims and represents unity, humility, and complete submission to the will of Allah.

As Zimbabwe’s Muslim community observes this important religious occasion, the emphasis remains on faith, sacrifice, and compassion values that underpin the spirit of Eid al-Adha.
