THE construction of the Mabori Bridge across the Murongwe River is set to ease years of transport challenges for communities in Mberengwa district, improving access to Zvishavane town and the commercial hub of Mataga.
Residents say the project comes as a major relief following successive rainy seasons that left villagers stranded and, in some cases, risking their lives while attempting to cross flooded waters.
Once completed, expected by mid-year, the bridge is anticipated to enhance access to schools, markets and health services, while strengthening economic activity in the largely farming district.
Community members said movement of agricultural produce and school children has long been disrupted during the rainy season.
“The biggest problem is the movement of produce, school children and farmers. Every year during the rainy season, people drown while attempting to cross the flooded Murongwe River. We need a high-rise bridge, and we are happy that this will bring an end to our problems,” said one villager.
Residents expressed gratitude for the development initiative, saying they are hopeful the new infrastructure will mark a turning point for the Murongwe area.
Mberengwa East legislator Tasara Hungwe said the bridge will unlock economic opportunities for local farmers who depend on selling their produce in nearby towns.
“People from this area are mainly farmers and rely on selling their produce. Prior to this development, they were finding it difficult to transport goods to Zvishavane or Mataga. Trade in this area will increase, thereby fostering economic growth in Murongwe and the surrounding areas,” he said.
The project aligns with the Government’s infrastructure development thrust under the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2), which prioritises improved connectivity to stimulate rural economic growth and enhance service delivery.
