MASVINGO Province has launched the inaugural Tourism and Culture Festival aimed at promoting tourism development and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the province.

The three-day event, which has brought together tourism players, the business community, artists and students from tertiary institutions, is an important platform to showcase a unique blend of culture and heritage.

“We want to thank Masvingo City Council and its partners for coming up with this festival, which has given us a platform as tourism players to showcase our products and meet with various stakeholders relevant to our business. We are looking forward to improved business,” an exhibitor, Ms Rejoice Maridza said.

“For the next three days, we are going to see a number of activities that promote our culture. We will see our primary, secondary and tertiary institutions participating in various cultural festivals. Again, it is a platform for artists to showcase their talents,” a Masvingo resident noted.

Organised by Masvingo City Council, the local authority is convinced the province is poised to reclaim its status as a hub of cultural and economic activity.

“This festival is a clarion call by the City of Masvingo to contribute to the Provincial Economic Development Blueprint. Through hosting the event, Masvingo is poised to reclaim its status as a hub of cultural and economic activity. City of Masvingo is blessed with a rich heritage, including the Great Zimbabwe Monuments, the origin of our great nation’s name. We are also home to Lake Mutirikwi, Tugwi Mukosi Dam, numerous religious centres and reputable educational institutions,” Masvingo Mayor, Councillor Alec Tabe noted.

Director for Economics, Mr Clever Chingwara, who was representing the Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Ezra Chadzamira said the festival is a significant step towards promoting Masvingo as a tourist destination.

“This event is a vital opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage and reaffirm our commitment to creating jobs, increasing incomes and protecting our environment. Together, we strive to uplift our community through culture and tourism for a brighter future. We are proud to be launching this festival, which will showcase the beauty and diversity of Masvingo.”

The festival, which ends this Friday, features a variety of activities, including traditional music and dance performances, a sports tournament, and exhibitions showcasing local arts and crafts.

It is running under the theme, ” Echoes of the past, rhythm of the future.”
