MASVINGO City Council is seeking to collaborate with the GeoPomona Waste Management Company for the construction of a landfill that will be a waste management solution in the city.

The GeoPomona Waste to Energy project continues to receive widespread attraction from stakeholders across the country and this Wednesday, a delegation from the city of Masvingo visited the site on a benchmarking visit in an attempt to replicate the project in their city.

The city has decommissioned its age-old dumpsite to pave the way for the construction of a landfill.

“The City of Masvingo is bedevilled with a huge problem of waste management and hence this project has become a benchmark. We have seen it fit to come and learn so that we know how to develop a landfill since we have decommissioned our dumpsite,” Masvingo City Council’s Deputy Director of Environmental Health Services, Ms Sitabile Matava said.

GeoPomona Waste Management Company Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said employment opportunities are plenty, while civil works for the waste-to-energy plant are already in motion.

“The sorting plant has been hot commissioned and at this stage, we are looking to employ 150 people at the sorting plant. We are now moving to the waste-to-energy plant construction that we see starting in June this year.”

The project has already received massive support and last year, it received visits from several high-profile people. Apart from contributing about 22 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, the project will have a lasting impact in resolving the City of Harare’s waste management challenges.
