JAPAN has pledged its full support for Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, in a major diplomatic breakthrough that underscores Zimbabwe’s rising global profile.

The commitment was made during a high-level meeting in Tokyo between Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, and his Japanese counterpart, Honourable Fukushiro Nukaga, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Japanese Foreign Ministry has already pledged its unequivocal support for Zimbabwe’s candidacy. As Speaker of the House, I also commit our legislative support to this important endeavour,” Honourable Nukaga said.

The endorsement comes as Zimbabwe intensifies its diplomatic engagements under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s foreign policy of multilateralism and peaceful cooperation.

“This support from Japan is a clear demonstration of confidence in Zimbabwe’s commitment to global peace and international law. It aligns perfectly with our President’s vision that Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none,” Advocate Mudenda noted.

The meeting also highlighted the strengthening of bilateral ties between Zimbabwe and Japan, with both Speakers agreeing to establish a Zimbabwe–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association to promote legislative collaboration and cultural exchange.

Advocate Mudenda expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, and agriculture.

“We are thankful for JICA’s contributions to our development, including support for One Stop Border Posts and the Nacala Corridor. There is still room for deeper cooperation, especially in energy and mining, where Zimbabwe offers vast opportunities,” he said.

Advocate Mudenda also invited Japanese investors to explore Zimbabwe’s rich mineral resources, assuring them of constitutional protections for property rights.

“Zimbabwe has abundant petalite, which can meet the demands of the Japanese market. We welcome investment, and we guarantee protection under our laws,” he added.

Honourable Nukaga commended Zimbabwe’s participation at Expo 2025 Osaka and TICAD 9, praising the country’s pavilion for showcasing its rich cultural heritage and development potential.

“Such exchanges are vital for strengthening people-to-people relations. I look forward to visiting Zimbabwe and deepening our cooperation,” he said.

The visit concluded with both Speakers reaffirming their commitment to solidifying bilateral relations and enhancing economic and parliamentary collaboration.

Japan’s endorsement marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s diplomatic journey, positioning the country as a proactive contributor to global peace and development.
