Harare-Kanyemba Road upgrade accelerates

Story by Tendai Munengwa

THE upgrade of the Harare-Kanyemba Road is progressing rapidly, with significant milestones already achieved in the first phase of the project.

Driving along the mountainous stretch between Harare and Mazowe used to be a nightmare due to congestion caused by slow moving trucks, but local engineers and workers have moved with speed to upgrade the road into a two-way highway that has brought smiles to motorists.

“We want to first thank our President for fulfilling his promise to upgrade this road, now we can do our business on time because the road is now dual,” a motorist said.

“We used to face challenges as some trucks would develop faults at this mountain and motorists would be forced to congest, but now that the road has been upgraded, there is smooth flow,” another added.

Of major interest is the expertise being demonstrated by local engineers and workers who are now using this heavy-duty yellow metal equipment with precision and the result – a new dual carriageway.

“We started last year our first phase of 21.7 kilometres from Lomagundi in Harare and this is the last eight kilometre lap, we are doing a dual carriage way so we are moving with speed and by December this year, we will be done,” Exodus Site Engineer, Engineer Jeme Arnold said.

Works at Blueridge just a few kilometres to Mazowe Dam show that the new highway under the Second Republic’s signature projects can be officially opened to traffic anytime from now.
