Gwanda’s drive towards city status gathers pace as modern infrastructure reshapes town

GWANDA’S ambition to attain city status by 2026 is taking visible shape, as modern infrastructure and renewed investor confidence continue to transform the Matabeleland South provincial capital into a vibrant urban hub.

Once a modest mining town, Gwanda is now witnessing a construction boom, with new commercial buildings and shopping complexes redefining its skyline. The rapid growth has been attributed to the conducive investment climate under the Second Republic, which has encouraged both local entrepreneurs and corporate players to take part in the town’s modernisation drive.

“I attribute this growth to the mantra of the second republic that says nyika inovakwa nevene vayo,” one local businessperson said.

“What is critical now for us as Gwanda is for us business people to be united and forge ahead with building our town,” another added.

“We keep pushing each other so that we continue on this good trajectory, but the most important thing is unity of purpose,” a community member said.

Starting from humble beginnings, Mr Clive Dube, the owner of the newly commissioned shopping mall this weekend, said he was inspired by the work ethic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“We came up with this structure so that we can develop our town, but above all to fulfil the President’s vision of having modern structures,” he said.

The project has generated employment opportunities and boosted service provision, reinforcing Gwanda’s readiness for city status.

Gwanda Mayor, Councillor Thulani Moyo, expressed confidence that the wave of infrastructure development is perfectly aligned with the municipality’s strategic plan.

“As the municipality, we are happy to see these structures coming up; they speak to our vision to achieve city status,” he said.

Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Albert Nguluvhe, praised the development as a reflection of hard work and community commitment.

“This modern architectural structure is more than a hub for social and economic activities; it is a symbol of what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and willingness to learn and adapt. This facility has created a lot of employment in this area.”

Gwanda Municipality is on a drive to modernise the town, partnering with Mines in waste management and construction of new vending markets.
