GWANDA’S quest to achieve a city status by 2026 is on course with major businesses in the town investing in modern infrastructure.
New buildings now dominate the major streets of Gwanda, which is the provincial capital for Matabeleland South.
The construction sector boom in the town put the local authority’s vision of attaining a city status by year-end right on course.
“As a provincial capital, attaining the city status is long overdue and we have set in motion all the conditions for attaining it. This includes sprucing up all the buildings in the CBD and ensuring that all the new structures in town comply with modern standards. We have space for flats in town and we are engaging a local bank to upgrade most infrastructure and the bank has shown interest,” Gwanda Municipality Mayor Councillor Thulani Moyo said.
The local authority has also upscaled efforts to curb night vending, amid plans by the local authority to construct modern vending facilities.
Meanwhile, the municipality has also partnered with the mining giant, Blanket in waste management.
