CHEGUTU – THE Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Honourable Polite Kambamura, has visited Pickstone Mine in Chegutu following a fatal incident that claimed four lives after the collapse of a disused mine.
The incident, which occurred Wednesday morning involved a group of approximately 40 illegal miners who reportedly gained access to the restricted site after bribing a security guard.
According to Pickstone Mine Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Beare, the group proceeded to blast the walls of an open pit, destabilising the structure and trapping five artisanal miners beneath the rubble.
“As a mine, we are now in the process of installing surveillance cameras, including the use of drones, to strengthen our security systems. We have also introduced various initiatives aimed at empowering the local community, such as allocating claims to promote formalisation,” he said.
Deputy Minister Kambamura condemned the illegal mining activities, describing them as a threat to life and the integrity of the mining sector.
“We will not stand by and allow illegal miners to wreak havoc in the mining industry. We are actively working on enforcing stricter laws to prevent such incidents. At the same time, we urge large-scale mining operations to enhance their security protocols,” he said.
The Deputy Minister further underscored the importance of fostering good relations between mining companies and local communities, citing joint ventures as a strategy to reduce conflict and promote shared prosperity.
“As the government, we continue to encourage mining giants to establish joint ventures with communities to create mutual benefits and minimise tensions. We commend Dallaglio for its proactive approach and investment in the community,” he said.
The tragedy has reignited calls for the formalisation of the artisanal mining sector and the prioritisation of safety among small-scale miners. Government remains committed to developing sustainable mining practices while ensuring the protection of lives and livelihoods in mining communities.
