THE GeoPomona Waste to Energy Project is entering its final construction phase and continues to garner widespread support from key partners, including the country’s largest commercial bank, CBZ Holdings.
A delegation from CBZ, led by Group Chief Executive Officer Mr Lawrence Nyazema, visited the project in Harare this Thursday.
Since taking over waste collection responsibilities from the City of Harare last year, GeoPomona has made a significant impact, collecting an average of 1 500 tonnes of solid waste per day from illegal dumpsites.
With the sorting plant at the waste management project site in Harare now complete, the firm awaits construction of the main waste-to-energy plant which will generate at least 22 megawatts of electricity once operational.
“This project is the first of its kind in Africa and we are excited to continue supporting GeoPomona until the project gets to finality. The modern equipment at this site attests to the effectiveness of the project as a solution to the waste management challenges faced by Harare,” Nyazema said.
GeoPomona Chief Executive Officer Dr Dilesh Nguwaya owes the success of the project to their partners who are providing key support.
“We are focused on clearing illegal dumpsites in Harare and excited that we have beaten the record set by Harare of collecting waste whereby on average we are clearing about 1 500 tonnes per day. This is massive in terms of creating a clean city, and so far, we are happy that our partners are backing this magnificent project so that we are successful,” Dr Nguwaya said.
The GeoPomona Waste to Energy Project was launched in 2022 following the handover of the dumpsite to GeoPomona by the City of Harare.
The firm has transformed the once filthy area into a modern waste management facility as it enters its final stage of constructing the waste-to-energy plant.
