GOVERNMENT says restoring traditional leadership structures dismantled during the colonial era is key to preserving Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage while strengthening grassroots governance and rural development.
The remarks were made during the installation of Mr Joseph Evurath Sibanda as Chief Rera in Chivi, Masvingo Province, where hundreds of community members gathered to witness the restoration of the traditional institution.
For many in the community, the occasion represented not only the installation of a chief but also the revival of a long-standing cultural legacy.
“This event is more than an installation ceremony to us; rather, a cultural celebration. It symbolises the restoration of our identity, heritage and dignity,” said one community member.
Another resident expressed confidence that the new chief would help unite the community and drive development.
“We are confident that our new substantive chief will strengthen social cohesion, safeguard cultural values and accelerate development initiatives in this area.”
Speaking after presiding over the ceremony, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Ezra Chadzamira said traditional leaders remain central to community development and the preservation of Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.
“The Chiefs and their Headmen and Village Heads play a very important role in the planning and implementation of all rural development projects. Besides participating in the planning and implementation processes, the traditional leaders encourage their subjects to participate at all stages of the project cycle. Without their support, most projects might have either failed to take off or collapsed immediately after completion.
“Equally important is the Chiefs’ role in the promotion and preservation of our culture, values, norms and heritage. Without these, we will never be real Zimbabweans.”
The Rera family described the restoration of the chieftainship as the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration.
“As a family, the restoration of the Rera Chieftainship is a historic milestone and marks the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration to reclaim our traditional institution that was dismantled during the colonial era. We are going to ensure the promotion of unity, preserving culture and championing development within this community,” said Senator Joseph Chirongoma.
The Rera chieftainship is an offshoot of the VaMhari dynasty, with historical links to the traditional houses of Chivi, Bere, Mapanzure, Banga and Nhema.
Chief Rera was appointed by President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa on April 16, 2026, becoming the first substantive holder of the restored chieftainship.
