29-year-old Ebel Chibanda of Club AFC of Harare is the winner of the inaugural Bernard Mizeki commemoration marathon held in Marondera this Sunday morning.
Chibanda won the 10km race in a time of 28 minutes and 30 seconds ahead of Wyne Kabondo, who came second in a time of 28 minutes 50 seconds.
Chibanda, who came 4th at the recently held Victoria Falls marathon, said he is was excited winning the inaugural Bernard Mizeki commemoration marathon, which is meant to celebrate the life of Anglican missionary and martyr who died on 18th June 1896.
“I am very excited to have won this race which is being held for the first time, my aim is to represent Zimbabwe at major international events so this is part of my preparations,” said Chibanda.
Melody Kaseke of ZRP came first in the women’s category in a time of 37 minutes and 8 seconds.
In the five km race, Golden Mhondoro came first in a time of 12 minutes 9 seconds, while Hazel Chiundo won in the female category in 18 minutes 28 seconds.
A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of eight parishioners who died in a bus accident coming from the Bernard Mizeki annual commemorations in Marondera last month.
