A 22-year-old man from Masvimbo Village in Mberengwa under Chief Mposi has been sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment after being convicted of raping and robbing a 25-year-old woman from the same area.
The court heard that on 1 January this year, at around 10pm, the complainant was asleep in her bedroom with her son when the accused broke into the house.
He was reportedly armed with a knife and a torch when he forcibly entered the bedroom.
After gaining entry, the accused stabbed the complainant on the arm before raping her. Following the assault, he demanded cash.
Fearing for her life, the complainant handed over US$50 to the accused, who fled the scene.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to the accused’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 26-year-old Zvishavane man, Mthulisi Mangena, has been sentenced to an effective six years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to kill a fellow patron at a nightclub in December last year.
The court heard that an argument broke out between Mangena and Kelvin Murefu over a missing wristwatch at a Zvishavane nightclub. Mangena allegedly picked up a beer bottle and struck Murefu on the head before fleeing.
