THE City Sports Centre was transformed into a vibrant stage of colour, rhythm, and creativity on Saturday as the 13th edition of the ‘Let Them Schools Arts Festival’ concluded, drawing participation from more than 40 schools across the capital.

The two-day event, now firmly established as a highlight on the schools’ arts calendar, brought together learners from Early Childhood Development (ECD), primary, and secondary levels to showcase their talents through music, dance, drama, poetry, and visual arts.

For many students, the festival was not just a competition but a cultural awakening.

“We learnt a lot about culture and why it is important in our lives, and I learnt that I should also embrace Shona, my language, as I did not really know much about it,” a student said.

Organisers say for the first time, Early Childhood Development learners participated, adding a fresh dimension to the festival.

“What’s different this year is the inclusion of ECDs. Traditionally, only primary and secondary schools participated, but now ECDs have joined in. This brings a fresh approach, as we aim to integrate them from a very young age,” organiser, Chido Musasiwa noted.

Chief Director in the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Recreation, Dr Eugenia Chidhakwa, said the festival plays a crucial role in preserving Zimbabwe’s heritage.

“It is an important festival because primary school children are the foundation of our arts and culture activities. When schools inculcate such ideas, it shows us that we are keeping to our culture, which speaks to our identity,” she said.

The festival, which has become a key part of the schools’ arts calendar, seeks to nurture creativity while preserving cultural heritage.

As curtains came down on the Let Them Schools Arts Festival, organisers and participants alike agreed that the event is not just about entertainment, but also about safeguarding culture for future generations.
