ZIMBABWE has assumed the one-year chairmanship of the Bureau of African Registrars General (ARGB) following the conclusion of the Annual Expert Group Meeting for African Registrars General and the Board of the Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Shared Asset in Victoria Falls.

Registrar General Mr Henry Machiri took over the chairmanship from his Equatorial Guinea counterpart, Mr Miguel Nguema, who led the Bureau during the previous term.

Accepting the responsibility, Mr Machiri thanked member states for entrusting Zimbabwe with the leadership role.

“We are grateful for the confidence placed in Zimbabwe and reaffirm our commitment to advancing Africa’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics agenda,” he said.

Mr Machiri said Zimbabwe’s tenure will focus on strengthening collaboration among African Registrars General, accelerating digital transformation and innovation in civil registration systems, improving birth and death registration, and promoting knowledge sharing across the continent.

He also reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to working closely with the African Union Commission, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Regional Economic Communities and development partners to strengthen legal identity systems across Africa.

Calling for continued cooperation among member states, Mr Machiri said:

“Let us continue working together in the spirit of solidarity, mutual respect and shared responsibility to accelerate universal and inclusive civil registration systems that ensure every person is legally recognised from birth to death.”
