THE Second Republic’s efforts to strengthen Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have been welcomed by entrepreneurs, who say increased government support and improved access to business opportunities are helping the sector grow.

The inaugural National SMEs and Cooperatives Dialogue, which opened at the Harare International Conference Centre on Thursday, brought together government, development partners, financial institutions and private sector representatives to explore ways of strengthening Zimbabwe’s MSME sector.

Participants said government policies have enabled many small businesses to formalise their operations, access training, participate in exhibitions and engage directly with policymakers.

National Organising Secretary for the Zimbabwe Small and Medium Enterprises, Mr Lucky Moyo, said the dialogue provides an important platform for entrepreneurs.

“Today’s dialogue has provided an important platform for entrepreneurs to network, exchange ideas and explore new market opportunities that will enhance the competitiveness of local enterprises.”

Zimbabwe Women in Manufacturing president Ms Rairo Gunguwo welcomed the government’s continued support for the sector.

“We commend the government’s commitment to empowering women, young people and community-based enterprises. This dialogue demonstrates an inclusive approach to economic development, where the voices of entrepreneurs are being heard and incorporated into national development strategies.”

Speaking at the event, Elizabeth Chakudunga said stronger partnerships are essential to unlocking the full potential of the sector.

“Enhanced collaboration between government, financial institutions, local authorities and the private sector remains key to unlocking the full potential of MSMEs and cooperatives, which continue to play a significant role in employment creation, value addition and economic transformation.”

The dialogue continues on Friday, with delegates expected to propose practical measures to strengthen the MSME ecosystem and enhance its contribution towards Vision 2030 and Zimbabwe’s broader economic transformation agenda.
