Church pledges to support development mantra

Story by Mercy Bofu-Matinha

THE Government has called upon churches to continue supporting President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s development drive through taking part in programmes that improve livelihoods.

Addressing congregants at the Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church gathered in Chivi district of Masvingo for their Women’s Conference, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honorable Ezra Chadzamira commended the church for supporting government in the empowerment of women and youths.

“As the government, we are happy that our indigenous churches are also at the forefront promoting women and youth empowerment. That is what our government is spearheading, and we are always ready to support such initiatives.

“Our goal is to ensure improved livelihoods by 2030 as espoused by our President, Emmerson Mnangagwa. We must work together to support that vision,” he said.

ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Chairperson, Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa took the opportunity to urge church members to participate in developmental programmes spearheaded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in their communities.

“The ZANU PF led government is implementing development programmes in our communities. We are saying let us also prioritize our women and youth. Ensure that you are involved in those projects. Remember our President’s mantra, ‘Nyika inovakwa nekunamatirwa nevene vayo,'” he said.

Church leaders pledged to work with government in improving livelihoods, especially in the education and agriculture sectors.

“Our Bible is very clear that it is our duty as the church to pray for our leaders and our country. That alone speaks volumes of the role we must play in ensuring the peace and development of our country,” Acting Bishop for Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church, Bishop Tony Sigauke.

“As women we are having our week-long conference where we are teaching each other on the importance of taking care of our families, important business skills that ensure our empowerment and improved livelihoods. We are aware of the drug and substance abuse, which has affected many families hence we come together to pray for our children and discuss how we can help them,” said the national chairlady of Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church, Ms Theresa Nhaitayi.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is on record saying the church and government share cordial relations, and many are contributing towards food security through projects in the agriculture sector and constructing schools.
