A netball tournament held in Shamva this Saturday unified the community as it raised awareness on child marriages, drug abuse and girl child empowerment.
The netball tourney , one of the major sporting events in Shamva provided a critical platform for the community to address social vices affecting youths.
Five teams from Mashonaland Central province took part in the successful big five netball tournament held at Chakonda grounds in Shamva on Saturday.
“Netball is good because it teaches preparedness at all time, it gives endurance even if situations are difficult, women learn to manage time as well and be calculative. We train all the time even during holidays.
I want to thank our sponsor for organising this tournament, its helping us as the girl child because we are keeping ourselves occupied,” said a participant.
The big five netball tournament was organised by Shamva Artisanal Miners Association vice chairman Mr. Sam Nyathi who also runs Nyati Queens netball team.
“I decided to sponsor women’s netball after seeing that there is a high rate of child marriages, drug abuse and sex trafficking which is happening in our country so as a miner who is around here I decided to sponsor women’s netball because my brother Simba Bhora is sponsoring soccer. I am actually on an agenda for them to do a national tour so players can mingle in Harare, travel to as far as Bulawayo. We have an invitation to participate in Mutare as well,” he said.
Mvurwi High School netball team scooped first prize.
The event also featured Bradley Hgh School, Nyati Queens from Shamva, Chipadze High School and SOS Orphanage Home teams from Bindura.
