THE government has up-scaled its efforts to provide decent accommodation to its workforce with the Beitbridge Redevelopment Housing Project that stalled in 2008 now at an advanced stage.

With one of the fundamental pillars of the Second Republic’s Vision 2030 being anchored on providing adequate housing that is secure, peaceful and dignified, there is consensus that the expedition of the Beitbridge Redevelopment Housing Project is key if the country is to attain its vision.

The project is set to accommodate 64 families.

The Estates Development and Maintenance chief director in the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, Mrs Kudzai Rimai said, “We adopted this project in 2022. The project entails construction of garden flats and duplex flats and it will accommodate 64 families. Currently, we are doing roofing work, we are also working on BICs and we have material for all the next levels.”

The Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Honourable Soda Zhemu, who toured the project this Thursday, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing decent and non-monetary benefits to civil servants.

“This is a project of much interest, we toured this project and I am impressed by the progress after my ministry took over the project. The thrust of the Second Republic is to provide accommodation to its people, especially the civil servant. The project is aimed at providing one of the non-monetary benefits that are supposed to be given to civil service,” the Minister said.

The Beitbridge Redevelopment Housing Project is one of the projects for the people of the border town which was started in 2004 and stalled in 2008.

The project was then transferred from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities in 2021, with construction works now at an advanced stage.
