Artists on using artificial intelligence

Story by Grace Sibanda

ZIMBABWEAN artists are embracing Artificial Intelligence to match international standards as they prepare to expand their craft into the global market.

The tide of Artificial Intelligence is gripping the world, setting a standard were every sector is striving to achieve.

Artists stressed that AI promotes a shift from traditional art norms to more advanced technological norms, which are at par with international standards.

“We can safely say using AI is like adding a new paintbrush to the collection, it should not replace our traditional way of doing things but it can work to help grow the vision,” said one of the artists.

Another added, “As a disabled artist I feel that the use of AI will not make me a lazy artist but I feel it will help me deliver quicker on my targets.”

Speaking at a workshop after a successful exhibition of his own art that has been infused with artificial intelligence tools, Zimbabwean artist based in South Africa Chenjerai Kamushinda says artists should understand legal and ethical issues in their use of artificial intelligence to enhance their creativity.

“There are issues to do with copyright which artists need to be aware of. In as much as artificial intelligence has come in to assist us, it would do artists a greater good to not solely rely on artificial intelligence because creativity and originality are important in this industry,” he said.

In a world where AI is dominating, artists are embracing AI systems to increase productivity where quantity and speed are the key, in efforts to survive in the competitive industry.
