GOVERNMENT has called on accountants to embrace digital innovation while strengthening financial accountability and ethical standards, describing the profession as critical to Zimbabwe’s drive towards Vision 2030.
The call was made at the 26th Southern Africa Association of Accountants (SAAA) Annual Conference underway in Kariba, where delegates are examining how the profession can harness emerging technologies while maintaining integrity, transparency and good governance.
SAAA President Mrs Tariro Bushu said accountants must adapt to rapid technological advances to remain relevant in an increasingly digital economy.
“The accounting profession can no longer afford to resist change. Artificial Intelligence, automation and other emerging technologies are transforming the way we work, and we must embrace these innovations while maintaining the highest ethical standards. We must continuously upskill ourselves so that we remain relevant in an increasingly digital economy.”
Delegates said the conference provides an opportunity to strengthen professional skills and exchange ideas on emerging trends shaping the profession.
Mr Simba Takodza said the gathering equips accountants with the knowledge needed to respond to technological change.
“This conference is important because it equips us with the knowledge and skills required to adapt to technological changes… The knowledge we gain here will enable us to improve service delivery and continue adding value to our organisations and the country’s economic development.”
Mr Donald Mangenje said Artificial Intelligence should enhance, rather than replace, the work of accountants.
“Artificial Intelligence should be viewed as an ally rather than a threat. It enhances efficiency by automating routine processes, but human judgement, professional scepticism and ethical decision-making will always remain indispensable.”
Mr Kuda Chemhuru said accountants remain central to safeguarding public and private resources through sound financial management and accountability.
Officially opening the conference, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Torerai Moyo urged accountants to uphold transparency while embracing innovation.
“Accountants are the custodians of financial integrity. Your responsibility goes beyond balancing books; you safeguard public resources and inspire confidence in our institutions through transparency and accountability… I urge you to embrace innovation while remaining steadfast in upholding ethical standards, strengthening financial governance and ensuring that every public dollar is accounted for.”
The annual conference has brought together accounting professionals from across Zimbabwe to share best practices on digital transformation, sustainability reporting and the future of the profession as the country advances its technology-driven economic agenda.
