THE induction of the 8th Junior Council in Zvimba District has been hailed as a significant step in empowering young people to participate in leadership and governance, with learners commending the Second Republic for creating platforms that nurture future leaders.

Zvimba Rural District Council officially inducted the new Junior Council this week as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen youth participation in community development and decision-making processes.

Among the newly inducted members is Tafadzwa Mberikwazvo, who represents persons with disabilities in the council.

“I am happy that young people living with disabilities are also being recognised and included in leadership structures. This demonstrates that everyone has the ability to contribute meaningfully, regardless of their condition,” he said.

The newly appointed Junior Chief Executive Officer, Kupakwashe Nyakasoka said the platform gives young people an opportunity to contribute towards national development through leadership and civic engagement.

“I feel greatly honoured to have been entrusted with this responsibility as Junior CEO. This platform gives us an opportunity to represent the voices of young people and actively contribute ideas that can bring positive development in our communities and schools,” he said.

Junior Council Chairperson Mufaro Kohwera said the initiative equips learners with leadership skills while encouraging them to advocate for issues affecting children and communities.

“The Junior Council is important because it allows young people to participate in leadership at an early stage. We are ready to work together, advocate for children’s rights and help address issues affecting learners in our communities,” she said.

Another Junior Councillor, Nicole Fransisco, praised Government and the local authority for empowering young people through leadership opportunities.

“We appreciate the Government and Zvimba RDC for creating these opportunities because they are empowering young people with leadership skills, confidence and a sense of responsibility for the future,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer of Zvimba Rural District Council, Enias Chidakwa said the initiative plays a critical role in preparing future national leaders.

“The Junior Council initiative is an important platform that equips young people with leadership and governance skills from an early age. These are future policymakers, professionals and leaders that our country will depend on,” he said.

Patron Zandile Maseko said mentors are committed to instilling values of integrity, responsibility and community service among the young leaders.

“As patrons and mentors, our role is to guide these young leaders and help them develop values of integrity, responsibility and service to their communities,” she said.

Government continues to promote youth participation in governance through initiatives such as Junior Councils and the Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe, as part of efforts to cultivate responsible and active citizens.
