GOVERNMENT has intensified efforts to complete outstanding independence legacy projects in Matabeleland South, with rehabilitation work on the Gwanda-Maphisa Road gathering momentum.
The successful hosting of this year’s national Independence Day celebrations in Maphisa was widely described as historic and memorable by residents of Matabeleland South.
Ongoing works on the Gwanda–Maphisa Road, where heavy equipment such as front-end loaders and tipper trucks remain on site beyond the celebrations, underscore Government’s commitment to fulfilling its promise to complete all legacy projects initiated in honour of independence celebrations.
“We thank the Government for this road because it is now easy to travel,” a resident said.
“What makes us happy is that work is continuing and we are confident that we are going to finish this road,” an employee said.
“We are going to take 15 minutes from Gwanda to Magwe,” a motorist said.
“We are so impressed with what is happening,” a community member said.
An engineer at the Mvana Kononkwe site said that they are going to complete the stretch before the October deadline.
“We are almost done with earthworks of the entire stretch. We have also done priming of the two-kilometer stretch, and all things being equal, we are going to finish before October,” DiffLock site Engineer Vincent Gumbo said.
Government assured people of Matabeleland South that it will complete all the independence legacy projects.
“We are going to complete all the projects, this I can assure you , everything we started we are going to complete. I am going to commission more than 100 projects,” Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Matebeleland South Honourable Albert Nguluvhe said.
Once this road is completed, access to key markets in the mining and agriculture sectors will improve, and it will also create new economic opportunities for the province.
