Women rise to top of Zimbabwe’s legal sector in historic milestone

ZIMBABWE’S justice delivery system has entered a new phase, with women now occupying some of the country’s most influential legal offices in what observers describe as a major milestone for gender equality and inclusive governance.

Leading the judiciary from this Friday is Elizabeth Gwaunza, who assumes the role of Chief Justice alongside a growing number of women heading key institutions within the justice sector.

Other senior female office bearers include Prosecutor-General Loice Matanda-Moyo, Attorney-General Virginia Mabhiza, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mrs Vimbai Nyemba and Judge President Mary Zimba-Dube.

The appointments are being viewed as part of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s broader drive towards inclusivity, empowerment and equal opportunities for women in leadership.

Legal experts say the developments strengthen confidence in the justice system while encouraging more women to pursue careers in law and public service.

“The rise of women into these strategic positions demonstrates Zimbabwe’s commitment to gender mainstreaming and inclusive leadership. It is also proof that competence and professionalism continue to guide appointments in the justice sector,” legal expert Mr James Makiya said.

The increased representation of women in senior legal offices comes as Zimbabwe continues implementing policies aimed at advancing gender equality across all sectors.

Observers say women in leadership positions within the judiciary and legal fraternity bring diversity and balance to justice administration.

“This is a proud moment for Zimbabwean women. It shows that women can lead even in areas that were traditionally dominated by men,” legal expert Ms Agnes Chatsama said.

Mrs Devoted Nyagano added: “We applaud this move. It is empowering for all women and provides a solid platform for younger girls aspiring to join the legal profession.”

The growing influence of women in Zimbabwe’s justice sector is being celebrated as part of wider national efforts to promote social, economic and political empowerment while dismantling longstanding barriers in leadership.
