SOUTH Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s digital transformation agenda, pledging to deepen cooperation on strategic digital literacy programmes and artificial intelligence development while building on its US$350 million investment in the National Information Access Centre.

The renewed commitment emerged following a meeting between the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, and South Korea’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Jae Kyung Park, in Harare.

The engagement reflects growing bilateral cooperation aimed at accelerating Zimbabwe’s transition into a competitive digital economy through skills development, technology innovation and the adoption of emerging technologies.

Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Park said South Korea remains ready to expand collaboration with Zimbabwe in key areas of digital transformation, particularly artificial intelligence and innovation.

He noted that despite differing economic and developmental circumstances, the two countries share similar aspirations regarding digital transformation and the adoption of advanced technologies.

“The key issue of digital transformation and AI was central to our discussions. I shared how the Korean Government and Korean companies are advancing AI transformation, while the Minister elaborated on Zimbabwe’s AI strategy. We both recognised strong similarities in our approaches despite different environments and circumstances.”

Ambassador Park said the partnership would be instrumental in positioning Zimbabwe to take advantage of opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and high-end technological innovation.

Discussions also focused on strengthening cooperation in digital skills development, research, capacity building and technology-driven innovation as Zimbabwe advances its digital economy agenda.

The partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities in artificial intelligence, research and innovation, enhancing Zimbabwe’s technological capabilities and supporting the country’s broader socio-economic development objectives.
