Former minister Walter Mzembi acquitted in US$200 000 TV donation case

FORMER Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi has been acquitted on charges of criminal abuse of office linked to the donation of four LED public viewing television sets valued at US$200 000.
Mzembi was arrested in June last year shortly after returning from South Africa.
The State alleged that the former Tourism and Hospitality Minister donated the television sets to three churches, the United Family International Church, Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministry, and Zion Christian Church without obtaining approval from Treasury or Cabinet.
The matter also involved US$2 million allocated by Treasury to the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality in 2010 for the procurement of television sets intended for 40 fan parks during the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa.
Following a full trial, the court found Mzembi not guilty and acquitted him of all charges.
