THE Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West Province, Honourable Marian Chombo, is expected to visit the Elvington Mine site in Chegutu this morning following a fatal shaft collapse that has left miners trapped underground.
The incident occurred on Friday night at around 10pm at Mutohwe Shaft, where nine artisanal miners were trapped after a rockfall.
Five miners managed to escape, although one sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Two miners have been confirmed dead, while two others remain trapped beneath the debris, with indications suggesting chances of survival are extremely low.
Mashonaland West Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Josphat Jaji, confirmed the development, saying rescue operations are underway as authorities work to retrieve the bodies and secure the shaft.
Members of the Civil Protection Committee are expected to accompany the Minister during the site visit as efforts continue to manage the situation.
