VICE-President Colonel (Rtd) Dr Kembo Mohadi has assured the nation that all Independence legacy projects in Matabeleland South will be completed, as preparations for this year’s national celebrations gather momentum.

Speaking during a tour of the Maphisa venue on Thursday, the Vice President said government is satisfied with progress, although some road works are lagging behind.

“I am impressed by the work that has been done so far. The only disappointments are the roads, which are lagging behind, but we will continue to push. These projects are going to be here after Independence and our people are going to remember that we once held Independence here,” he said.

The tour followed a Cabinet Committee Ministerial Meeting on State Occasions, with the Vice President assessing readiness for the 46th Zimbabwe Independence Day celebrations.

He reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring all projects are completed for the benefit of communities.

“As government, we are going to ensure that all the projects that are part of Independence Legacy Projects are completed because they are meant for the people and these include all the projects across the whole province,” he said.

Site engineer Shawn Mukwamba said the venue will be ready on schedule.

“Now we are working on the last terraces… we can assure that the venue will be ready,” he said.

Key projects underway include the Joshua Nkomo Vocational Training Centre, the Gwanda-Maphisa Road, Bulawayo-Kezi Road, Filabusi Registry Office, as well as the construction of 40 science and computer laboratories and 40 village business units across Matobo. The Ratanyana Museum is also part of the legacy projects.

Matabeleland South will host this year’s celebrations under the theme Zim@46: Unity and Development towards Vision 2030.
