THE Zimbabwean flag flew high at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Tuesday as eight young martial artists and their coach, Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, received a hero’s welcome upon returning from the International Combat Organisation (ICO) World Championships held in Swansea, Wales.
The spirited national team made the nation proud by securing an impressive haul of 43 medals at the global competition. Their total count included 14 gold, 18 silver, and 11 bronze medals, marking an outstanding achievement for the delegation.
The arrivals hall was packed with jubilant families, friends, and supporters, who waved flags and erupted in cheers as the young champions walked through. Dressed in their team tracksuits and proudly displaying their prizes, the athletes were greeted by an ecstatic crowd bursting into traditional songs, ululations, and applause in celebration of their remarkable success.
Adding to the excitement, members of the Zimbabwe Ninja Academy staged martial arts demonstrations, showcasing high-flying kicks, flips, and weapon techniques that captivated onlookers.
Also in attendance were members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), who provided logistical support, including transport for parents and team members, while maintaining order during the celebrations. Representatives from Sports for ED, Hustlers for ED, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education were also present to congratulate the young heroes and heroines.
The talented team, aged between eight and sixteen, represented the Zimbabwe Martial Arts Weapon/Kobudo Team under the Zimbabwe Karate Union. Their schools, including David Livingstone Primary School, Rusununguko Government Primary School, ZRP Tomlinson Depot Primary School, St John’s Emerald Hill High School, Corpus Christi High School, The Lookeron School, and Avondale Primary School, also sent delegations to show their support.
Parents expressed immense pride in their children’s success and praised their determination and discipline. Young martial artist Anotida Hove delivered a heartfelt speech, thanking the parents and coach for their unwavering support.
“It was a struggle to find resources and sponsorship, but we want to thank our parents and Shihan Mashaya for standing with us and helping us shine on the world stage,” she said.
The ICO World Championships drew participants from countries that include Spain, Italy, the USA, Brazil, South Africa, Germany, France, Nepal, England, and Zimbabwe, among others, making Zimbabwe’s stellar performance a significant milestone for the nation’s martial arts fraternity.
