HARARE – THE construction of the 15 000-seater Mabvuku Stadium has commenced, with the project earmarked to be completed by the end of this year.
The stadium, a flagship initiative by Scottland Football Club, is being spearheaded by local legislator and businessman Honourable Scott Sakupwanya, to complement government efforts to provide world-class recreational facilities as well as to uplift communities by transforming the Mabvuku Number One Grounds into a modern sporting facility for both football and other recreational activities, .
Once a breeding ground for football legends such as former Warriors goalkeeper Brenna Msiska, midfield maestro Joe ‘Kode’ Mugabe, the Mugeyi brothers William and Wilfred, Cephas Chimedza, and Marshall Munetsi, currently plying his trade in the English Premier League with Wolves, the ground had deteriorated into a dust bowl and hotspot for criminal activity.
Construction works have begun with the demolition of the grandstand that was there and the erection of a perimeter wall, while the turf has already been laid.
The project will not only serve as the home stadium for Scottland FC, but also accommodate its feeder clubs, N’ombeyawora and Scottland Academy, as well as junior national teams.
“This is a project for the community. We want to provide a world-class facility where young talent can be nurtured. Mabvuku has produced legends before, and we want to pave the way for the next generation. This facility will be open to all, including junior national teams and we are not stopping at football. We plan to renovate the basketball courts and build a swimming pool,” Scottland FC Vice-Chairperson Musa Gwasira said.
The Mabvuku community has responded positively to the development, with residents expressing gratitude for the opportunities the project has already begun to create.
“Honourable Sakupwanya has delivered on his promise. This stadium will inspire hope among the youth and provide much-needed recreational space. The fact that locals are being hired is also commendable,” a resident said.
Once completed, the stadium will also have a training pitch next to the main arena and will be the home of Scottland and its feeder clubs, N’ombeyawora and Scottland Academy.
