HARARE – VETERAN broadcaster and former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) news anchor Joseph Madhimba has died, he was 71.
The sad development was confirmed by his son, Craig Madhimba, saying the esteemed media professional and academic died Wednesday morning in Okahandja, Namibia, following a long illness. Madhimba suffered a stroke last year and never fully recovered.
Madhimba was a household name in Zimbabwe’s post-independence broadcasting landscape, becoming a familiar face and voice on radio and television news bulletins.
He played a pivotal role in shaping national broadcasting in the early years of independence.
At the time of his departure from ZBC, Madhimba held the senior position of Head of News for Radio and Television, in addition to leading the reporters’ pool, a position of great influence within the public broadcaster.
Following his departure from ZBC, Madhimba transitioned into academia and was a lecturer at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) at the time of his passing.
Fellow media professionals and contemporaries have paid tribute to the late broadcaster, describing him as a talented, disciplined, and dedicated communicator who mentored many young journalists and set a professional standard in the newsroom.
Among those who worked closely with him are veteran broadcasters John Gambanga, Justice Dhliwayo, James Gora, and Jonathan Marerwa, who praised Madhimba’s calm demeanour, sharp intellect, and passion for truthful, balanced reporting.
Madhimba’s contribution to national broadcasting, both in Zimbabwe and beyond, is remembered as a legacy of professional excellence and mentorship.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the family.
