Zimbabwe’s drive to achieve universal health coverage by 2030 is in motion, with a new clinic which will service Hwange district nearing completion.

Aligned with Vision 2030’s goal of an accessible and efficient healthcare system, the new clinic exemplifies government and other stakeholders’ commitment to universal health coverage.

Beneficiaries are grateful for the project being implemented by government, Vexford Safaris and the local community for a catchment area of 300 households.

“We are used to travelling about 31km to Ndlovu Clinic which is the nearest; others would go to Hwange and Victoria Falls which is even far. With this new clinic we appreciate it,” said a community member.

“We are having challenges collecting medication for chronic illnesses such as BP but with this clinic, it’s better. It reduces the chances of one defaulting,” another added.

“It’s expensive to travel 31 km to the nearest clinic and worse off there is no direct road or public transport which makes it expensive and risky. We have hunting Safaris around this area this clinic will make the area more attractive,” said a community member.

Implementing partners and the local leadership, are confident that the project will complement ongoing government efforts to leave no one and no place behind.

Vexford Safaris director Mr Tigere Muchenje said, “We are adding on to what government is doing, we want to reduce maternal deaths as well as child mortality rate. Everyone must have access to health and initiatives like this will make that a reality. The clinic should open it’d doors to the public early next year. The clinic structure is complete what’s left are the staff cottages.”

“This feeds well into the government’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind. Health services have been brought to the doorstep of the Breakfast community. We appreciate the support we have received from our partners,” added Hwange Rural District Council Ward 1 Councillor Vulindlela Mhlanga.

The health centre has modern facilities including male and female wards, a pharmacy and an antenatal ward as well as waiting, consultation and treatment rooms.
