Tobacco contract floor opens in Mutoko

Story by Jerold Sasa

TOBACCO farmers in Mutoko are excited at the prospects that lie ahead after a contract floor was opened at Mutoko Centre.

Days of travelling long distances to Harare and sleeping in the open are now a thing of the past for tobacco farmers in Mutoko after Voedsel Tobacco International opened a contract floor in the area.

“We are very happy with the opening of floors here as we are no longer travelling long distances to Harare,” expressed a farmer.

“We used to have our money stolen in Harare while spending time sleeping in the open but now the floors are on our doorstep,” said another farmer.

“It shows the government cares about its farmers as its decentralisation policy is what has allowed tobacco companies,” added another.

The company has vowed to ensure farmers deliver the golden leaf at their convenience.

Voedsel Tobacco International manager, Mr Elijah Mhondiwa said, “We have come here as part of the government’s decentralisation program where we bring services to the people.”

Mutoko becomes the second district in Mashonaland East Province to have contract floors with the bulk being in Marondera.
