ZIMBABWE will participate in the 39th edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in India, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen cultural diplomacy and expand people-to-people and trade relations between the two countries.

The internationally acclaimed festival, regarded as the world’s largest crafts fair, will run from January 31 to February 15, bringing together artisans and performers from across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Zimbabwe has been a regular participant at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, using the platform to promote its cultural heritage, creative industries and national identity on a global stage. This year’s delegation comprises traditional dance groups and handicraft specialists, who were officially seen off on Wednesday at the National Arts Gallery in Harare.

Through performances that combine storytelling, rhythm and movement, alongside exhibitions of locally produced crafts, the delegation aims to showcase Zimbabwe’s artistic diversity while positioning the country as a destination of cultural excellence.

“We are excited to go and showcase what we are made of as a country,” said one of the participating creatives.

“We are going there to sell Brand Zimbabwe on a global platform,” another delegate added.

Zimbabwe and India share long-standing cultural and economic ties, underpinned by cooperation in trade, education and the creative industries. Cultural exchanges such as the Surajkund Mela continue to play a central role in deepening these relations.

Addressing the delegation, Indian Embassy Second Secretary Ms Dina Barnwal said Zimbabwe’s participation symbolised the enduring friendship between the two nations.

“Your participation is not merely a visit, it cements the bond we share. It is a showcase of our longstanding relationship, founded on mutual respect, which continues to grow in modern times. You are coming to a nation that respects its artisans. Prepare to be inspired as you experience Indian culture,” she said.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela brings together artisans and performers from Europe, Asia and Africa, offering a diverse display of traditional handicrafts, music and dance from across the world.
