Shock in Chiredzi as missing ECD learner found dead

THE Chiredzi community has been left in shock and mourning following the discovery of the body of a four-year-old girl who had been reported missing a day earlier.

The child, an Early Childhood Development (ECD A) learner at Chiredzi Government Primary School, was found dead this Wednesday morning in a bushy area near the Lowveld town, prompting police investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that investigations are underway, as details surrounding the incident remain unclear.

The child was reported missing on Tuesday, triggering concern among family members, school authorities and residents, before the tragic discovery the following day.

Residents who gathered near the scene expressed disbelief and anger, saying the incident had shaken the community’s sense of safety.

“It is shocking because nothing like this has ever happened before. Children go missing all the time, but they are always found,” a resident said.

“We are in shock and angry as well. How can someone be so cruel?” another community member said.

Parents have raised serious concerns about the safety of learners, particularly young children, questioning how an ECD pupil could have left school premises without being collected by a parent or guardian.

“We thought our children were safe, but this is a wake-up call that there are criminals out there who can be cruel,” a parent said.

Some residents questioned school safety protocols, calling for tighter supervision and accountability.

“This shows a gap in terms of security at schools. We thought such young learners are well taken care of and that they do not just leave school willy-nilly,” a resident said.

“It leaves a lot to be desired. How do we even relax and undertake normal activities when the safety of our children at school is now questionable?” a parent added.

The incident has revived painful memories of previous cases involving missing children, including the October tragedy in Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, where three children were reported missing and later found dead in the boot of a car.

Police have urged members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue, while the community has called for swift justice and strengthened child protection measures.
