ZIMBABWE has joined global efforts to advance affordable housing and sustainable urban development at the First Session of the 2026 United Nations Human Settlements Programme Executive Board in Nairobi.
The country is represented by the Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Professor Paul Mavhima who underscored the need to prioritise sustainable social amenities and expand access to affordable housing.
“Germany, the Chair of the Board, officially opened the session, calling for focused and constructive engagement to support the delivery of adequate and affordable housing. Reports were presented by chairs of various working groups, including the ad hoc working group on programmatic, budgetary and administrative matters, as well as the Open-ended Intergovernmental Expert Working Group on adequate housing for all. Several high-level dignitaries also commented on these reports,” he said.
Zimbabwe is among 36 member states on the governing board of UN-Habitat Executive Board, which is tasked with strengthening oversight, accountability and operational efficiency within the organisation.
The session is also reviewing the organisation’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, focusing on implementation frameworks for global urban development and housing delivery.
Together with Mozambique, Zimbabwe represents the Southern African region on the board, contributing to policy direction and regional priorities within the global housing agenda.
