Chipinge campaign tackles early marriages through education

EFFORTS to combat early marriages and curb school dropouts have been stepped up in Chipinge, where Government and private sector partners have launched an interactive empowerment programme targeting the girl child in vulnerable communities along the busy transport corridor linking Mozambique and South Africa.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in partnership with private stakeholders, brought together learners from 14 schools across the district, providing a platform for education, entertainment and dialogue on social challenges affecting young girls.

The programme comes against a backdrop of concern over rising cases of early sexual relationships and school dropouts in some communities along the trucking route, where young girls are, in some instances, exposed to exploitation by long-distance truck drivers, leading to early marriages and interrupted education.

Learners were equipped with life skills, awareness and guidance aimed at strengthening decision-making and keeping them focused on their education. I have learnt to be focused and pursue what I believe in so that I enjoy the future,” a young lady said.

“We learnt a lot from this awareness. We really need such initiatives like this to keep buzzing in our ears here and there, so we will always be alert,” a participant said.

“We are honoured as Greenfuel to be working hand in glove with the government to lure early childhood marriages so that our young sisters have a better tomorrow, as well to fight against harassment. We are aiming to keep on doing such kind of events annually,” Community Relations Manager at GreenFuel Merit Rumema Merit Rumema said.

“Empowering the girl child through exposure and mentorship is critical in ensuring that no learner is left behind in the country’s march towards Vision 2030 and the attainment of an educated, skilled and prosperous society,” Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Angeline Gata said.

The partnership between Government and the private sector demonstrates a collective commitment towards protecting children’s rights and promoting access to quality education.
