Zim clears eight new airlines under NDS1, setting stage for aviation growth

ZIMBABWE has approved eight new airlines to operate in its airspace since 2019, marking a major step forward in modernising the aviation sector under the National Development Strategy One (NDS1), the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has revealed.

CAAZ Director General, Mr George Mashababe said the approvals reflect significant progress in strengthening airspace management, improving regulatory systems and enhancing the country’s aviation competitiveness.

“The NDS1 focused on what can be done to boost the viability of the aviation sector, and riding on that thrust, there has been remarkable progress anchored by new airlines now coming to Zimbabwe, so indeed the NDS2 is a launchpad for growth that should accelerate the interest of new airlines into the country,” he said.

The increase in airline approvals comes amid a broader programme of airport upgrades, enhanced safety compliance and renewed international engagement aimed at making Zimbabwe a more attractive aviation hub.

Economist Mr Chris Mugari said the expansion demonstrates growing confidence in Zimbabwe’s economic reforms.

“It is a sign that the ongoing reforms by the second republic are yielding the intended goals, as the upgrading and refurbishment of airports have further attracted the interest of more foreign airlines going forward. There is a need to further consolidate gains in the upcoming National Development Strategy Two,” he said.

The momentum is expected to continue into 2026, boosted by Zimbabwe’s recent selection as the world’s best tourism destination by Forbes Magazine, an endorsement likely to draw increased tourist arrivals and further airline interest.

With NDS2 set to prioritise enhanced connectivity, industry players say the groundwork laid under NDS1 has positioned Zimbabwe for accelerated aviation growth, stronger regional integration and increased foreign investment in the air transport sector.
