ZILIWACO rallies support for Constitutional Amendment Bill 3

THE Zimbabwe National Liberation War Collaborators Association (ZILIWACO) has thrown its weight behind the Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill, describing it as a progressive proposal that should be adopted through the ongoing legislative process.

The organisation made its position clear during a meeting held in Bulawayo on Monday, where members expressed support for the proposed amendments, arguing that they would promote political stability and national development.

ZILIWACO Vice National Chairperson, Cde Josephine Gandiya, said the association has been engaging communities across the country to raise awareness about the Bill and its perceived benefits.

“We are not going back on the need to have this Bill adopted. We have been on a crusade in different provinces across the country to educate people on its importance and benefits,” she said.

“The extensions of presidential tenure are about stability and ensuring we do not dedicate time to politicking but to the national development agenda.”

Vice Secretary-General, Cde Gladys Mathuthu said the proposed amendments are consistent with practices adopted in other jurisdictions and should not be viewed as unusual.

“Our standpoint is very clear; besides saying we should adopt this Bill, we also understand that it is in line with international standard practices. We are not the only country seeking a presidential election by Parliament, and we do not see anything wrong at all with adopting that resolution,” she said.

ZILIWACO Bulawayo Provincial Chairperson, Cde Thulani Moyo said the association’s support for the Bill is rooted in its belief that the amendments will advance national development.

“We have done all we can to garner support for the Bill. We have done it out of a clear conscience that it is for the best in our country. The days of spending time on political bickering belong to the past; we now want progressive politics which prioritises development issues,” he said.

The remarks come as the Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill continues to undergo parliamentary processes following nationwide public consultations.

According to Parliament, more than 500 000 written submissions were received from members of the public during the consultation process, making it one of the most significant public participation exercises undertaken on a legislative proposal in Zimbabwe.

ZILIWACO members said they believe the adoption of the proposed amendments would strengthen democratic governance and support the country’s long-term development objectives.
