THE Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has condemned the violence that erupted during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Hardrock and Dynamos at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe on Sunday.
The match was abandoned in the 70th minute after supporters invaded the pitch with the two sides locked at 1-1.
In a statement, ZIFA said violence, intimidation and disorder have no place in football, stressing the need to preserve the sport as a safe and unifying environment for all stakeholders.
“The game must remain a safe, family-friendly and unifying space for players, officials, supporters, partners and all stakeholders who continue to invest their time, resources and passion into the growth of the beautiful game,” the association said.
ZIFA also backed the Premier Soccer League’s disciplinary processes, saying those responsible for any misconduct should face the necessary sanctions.
The association added that it will continue working with the PSL, clubs, security authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen match-day security and maintain football as a source of national unity, entertainment and pride.
The disturbances at Chahwanda Stadium come amid growing calls for tighter crowd control measures at local football matches.
