ZANU PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs, Cde Mabel Chinomona, has urged the party’s Women’s League to formulate practical resolutions ahead of the 23rd National People’s Conference, scheduled for Mashonaland West Province in October.
The call came as the Women’s League held its executive meeting following the enactment of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Act No. 3, while also preparing for its Assembly, which will be addressed this Thursday by President and ZANU PF First Secretary Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Cde Chinomona said preparations for the National People’s Conference should begin immediately, with a focus on producing measurable outcomes.
“We must start preparations for inter-district meetings ahead of the 23rd National People’s Conference slated for Chinhoyi. We need accurate reports which detail the number of people who benefited from the empowerment initiatives as well as new voters recruited.”
She described the enactment of Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 as a significant achievement for the party.
“We celebrate the new Act, which addresses the wishes of the people. All provinces mobilised, and it was because of your effort that we have this victory. Who doesn’t want a seven-year break from elections? So, as women, let us be exemplary in everything we do; the strength of the league is in unity.”
Among the proposals considered during the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 process was the merger of the Zimbabwe Gender Commission and the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, a move that faced opposition from various stakeholders.
The enacted Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 retained the Zimbabwe Gender Commission as a standalone constitutional body, a position supported by the Women’s League, parliamentarians, civic organisations and other stakeholders.
