Tragedy in Gweru: seven learners reportedly killed in commuter omnibus fire

Story by Wellington Makonese

SEVEN school children are feared dead after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in caught fire in Gweru this afternoon.

Reports say the vehicle had 24 learners on board when the blaze broke out in Senga suburb.

Police say investigations are underway, but preliminary findings suggest a fuel container inside the omnibus may have ignited after coming into contact with the vehicle’s batteries.

The fire quickly engulfed the vehicle, trapping some of the learners from Matongo Primary School.

About 17 pupils were reportedly rescued from the burning omnibus.

The injured have since been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police say investigations are continuing to establish the exact cause of the tragedy.
