A suspected armed robber died of gunshot wounds on Friday following a dramatic police chase along the Chegutu-Chinhoyi Road, while two of his alleged accomplices were arrested.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the suspects, Valentine Dipuka, Tafadzwa Mumba, and Tinashe Chimukono, had earlier carried out a violent robbery near the Newfound Turn-off in Gadzema, Chegutu.
Driving a Honda Fit, the trio allegedly rammed into a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus before threatening the driver with machetes and stealing more than US$200 000.
Following the incident, police received a tip-off and tracked the suspects to Chegutu CBD on September 19.
A dramatic high-speed chase ensued, with officers being forced to open fire after the suspects attempted to flee.
The chase ended with the suspects’ vehicle being immobilised.
Dipuka and Chimukono were arrested on the spot, while a third suspect, Tafadzwa Mumba, later died from gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
Meanwhile, the ZRP is warning criminal syndicates that confrontation with law enforcement agents will not be tolerated.
