Second Republic transforms mining sector for sustained growth

Story by Tamuka Charakupa

The Second Republic’s vision to transform the mining sector is bearing fruit with artisanal miners on a sustained drive to formalise their operations in the wake of safety concerns in the sector.

Artisanal mining is on a transformative drive in Chegutu after interventions by rising mining giant Magaya Mining through formalising mining activities in the area.

Giant Mine operates more than 40 shafts and miners concur on the benefits of the formalisation initiatives and partnerships.

“We welcome this development because it has put a stop to violence and disorder while also protecting us from disasters common while mining,” said Giant Mine director, Mr Hillary Run’anga.

Mr Run’anga confirmed the mutual benefits arising from the partnerships.

“At this site, we have 49 shafts which have 16 people per shift. We now have women venturing into mining because the partnership has brought sanity and order. We have also deployed safety officers who are always monitoring mining activities, and health and safety checks. All in all, over 1000 miners have benefited through downstream benefits,” he added.

Magaya Mining executive assistant, Mrs Gemma Peters weighed in, “All we are speaking about is production, production and productivity. As a mine, we are dedicated to maintaining a positive working environment with our community through fostering partnerships that derive mutual benefits.”

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Marian Chombo applauded the development as key in promoting mining activities in the province.

“I am impressed by the production levels being recorded by the mine. Mining itself is cur
rently accounting for at least 25 per cent of the provincial gross domestic product. Chegutu has been recording accidents, injuries and fatalities due to its prevalence rate of illegal artisanal mining. This partnership should be replicated across the country so that the sector grows and contributes to its full potential,” she said.
