ZIMBABWE’S junior tennis players Simphiwe Malunguza and Ronan Mtisi ended the two-week International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament on a high after claiming both the J30 and J60 doubles titles.

The pair produced a dominant performance across the tournament, securing victories in the two doubles categories to emerge as the standout local performers at the event, which attracted players from several countries.

Malunguza said the competition was intense and provided valuable exposure for young players.

“It feels great for me and my partner Chammy Zhang to go all the way and win. We made a good winning combination coming from different backgrounds,” she said.

The doubles success highlights the steady growth of junior tennis in Zimbabwe, with local players increasingly competing at a high level on the international circuit.

In the singles events, South Africa’s Brink Daniels won the boys’ title, while the United States’ Sydney Wright claimed the girls’ crown. Zimbabwean player Kudzai Chapepa won the first leg of the singles competition earlier in the tournament.

Daniels described the competition as demanding but rewarding.

“It is a brilliant tournament, long matches, but I played well,” she said.

Wright said her victory was a reflection of perseverance and hard work.

“This win is important for me as it proves my hard work has paid off. In the past, it has been difficult, but through God, I managed to pull through,” USA tennis player, Sydney Wright said.

Tournament director Ruggs Chikuchawa said the event had been a success despite the absence of Zimbabwean players in the singles finals.

“I think the tournament was a success, great two weeks of tennis action from the first leg to the second leg. It was unfortunate that we had no Zimbabwean players in the finals, but we continue pushing, giving our players the much-needed exposure to improve their rankings.”

ITF Junior tournaments provide an important platform for young players to gain international experience and improve their world rankings. Tennis Zimbabwe has continued to facilitate participation for emerging players from Harare and Bulawayo as part of efforts to develop the sport at grassroots and elite junior levels.
