The second edition of the Mashonaland West Provincial Munhumutapa Youth Games has kicked off in Karoi, bringing together young people from across the province in a sporting event aimed at promoting youth participation, unity and empowerment.

The games, which feature football, netball and athletics, have attracted teams from all districts in Mashonaland West and are being viewed by organisers as a platform for engaging youths in national development issues beyond sport.

ZANU PF Youth League Mashonaland West Provincial Chairperson, Cde Tapiwa Masenda, said the tournament reflects Second Republic policies that prioritise youth inclusion and participation in national growth.

“These Munhumutapa Youth Games are more than just competition. They are a platform to identify talent, to promote discipline, and to ensure that no young person is left behind. Under the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa, the youth are no longer spectators in development but active participants, and this tournament reflects the government’s commitment to empowering young people socially, economically and politically,” he said.

ZANU PF Mashonaland West Youth League Provincial Commissar, Cde Ertbetry Mbauwa, said the games also provide an opportunity to scout sporting talent while celebrating development initiatives targeting youths.

Organisers confirmed that winners across the various sporting disciplines will share prize money amounting to US$10 000.

Secretary for Finance, Cde Irving Matanga, said hosting the games in Karoi aligns with the government’s vision of inclusive development.

“We are proud to host these games here in Karoi because they speak directly to the Second Republic’s vision of inclusive development. Sport unites our youths, keeps them focused and channels their energy towards nation-building. The prize money is also a clear signal that talent and commitment among our young people are valued,” Cde Matanga said.

Participants said the games go beyond winning trophies, offering opportunities for networking, skills development and exchange of ideas.
“Being here has helped me improve my fitness and discipline. I have also met youths from different districts, and we are sharing ideas about business and leadership,” ZICOSU, student leader, Ashley Mashatise said.

Another participant, Grace Matashu, said the event promotes unity and teamwork while reinforcing youths’ understanding of their role in national development.

Organisers said the Munhumutapa Youth Games are designed to nurture sporting talent while encouraging young people to actively contribute to national development and decision-making processes.

The inaugural edition of the Provincial Munhumutapa Youth Games was held in Chegutu last year.
