Opposition activists face inciting public violence charges

SEVEN members of the opposition MDC-T have appeared before the courts facing charges of inciting public violence following allegations that they organised and promoted an unlawful demonstration in Harare.

The accused are Clifton Zumba (27), Shingirai Chitauro (45), John Simon (53), Tonderayi Cephas Makuyana (28), Decent Zaina (46), Jane Makovere (47) and Austin, aged 52.

According to the State, the group allegedly coordinated activities aimed at mobilising members of the public to participate in an unauthorised protest.

Prosecutors allege that on April 16, Zumba convened a meeting at Harvest House, where plans were drawn up for a public procession and demonstration without police clearance.

The planned protest, reportedly linked to the MDC-T, was intended to oppose Constitutional Amendment Number 3 and was scheduled to take place in Harare’s central business district.

The State further alleges that the accused produced and distributed flyers containing messages designed to mobilise public participation in the demonstration.

On April 22, the court heard, Zumba allegedly reconvened the group at Harvest House and distributed the flyers for circulation across Harare.

Some of the accused are also alleged to have travelled to Chitungwiza, where they distributed the materials at various locations.

Prosecutors contend that the actions of the accused were intended to incite members of the public to engage in acts of violence.

The seven have been remanded in custody and are expected to return to court next Wednesday for further proceedings.
