NPA pledges to tackle corruption and strengthen the justice system

Story by Farai Gwaze

THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it achieved a case clearance rate of over 60% in 2024, with the authority pledging to combat corruption and improve justice delivery.

In a media briefing, the Prosecutor General, Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo emphasised the NPA’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, revealing that five prosecutors are currently on trial for soliciting for bribes.

“During the year 2024, we did very well overally, having achieved a clearance rate of about 67 % of the cases set down,” she said.

“We hope that we are going to up our standards this year and clear more cases. We do not tolerate corruption in the NPA, right now we have five prosecutors on trial for soliciting bribes. We really want the public to trust the NPA because this is the last line of defense.

Justice Matanda-Moyo spoke on the existing relationship between the NPA and ZACC.

“With regards to the relationship we have with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, we have no choice but to work together. We are public servants and can not have instances that affect our work,” she said.

“Whatever misunderstands that arise, our approach is that misunderstandings must be resolved soonest, and work must continue. ZACC feeds into the NPA, without ZACC we will have no work so we need them.
