THE Zimbabwe women’s national football team, the Mighty Warriors kicked off their COSAFA Women’s Championship on a poor note after a one-nil defeat by Mozambique at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in South Africa this Thursday.

The neighbouring countries met in Port Elizabeth with Mozambique finding the killer instinct through a solitary strike which condemned the Mighty Warriors to their first loss in their first outing at the 2024 COSAFA Women’s tournament.

Despite possessing talented players like Ethel Chinyerere, Maud Mafuruse, and Priviledge Mupeti, Zimbabwe could not find the back of the net.

Mozambique’s winning goal came from a well-executed set piece, catching the Zimbabwean defense off guard.

“We are disappointed, but we will regroup and focus on the next match. We created chances, but couldn’t capitalise, we will work on our finishing and come back stronger,” said Mighty Warriors coach, Sithethelelwe Sibanda.

Zimbabwe’s next match is against Lesotho on Sunday.

Only the group winners from the four pools will advance to the semi-finals.
